Second Opinion
Happily the second opinion confirmed that, with no unexpected complications, my treatment should follow the standard US treatment of ABVD which is what I am following. Due to the bulk of my tumor, treatment may extend for 6 months if the PET scan at 4 months still shows a tumor. He also indicated that my bulky type tumor will require radiation based on standard practice.
Our chat was interesting because I got more insight into how cancer treatment is determined. There should be no surprise that cancer treatment is all numbers driven. Treatment follows statistical results driven by clinical trials. Everyone follows an industry standard proven to maximize results until there is some reason to deviate. Dr. Chow outlined the procedure he would follow, when he would reevaluate, and what criteria he would use. Should my case have complications at a later date or seem to deviate from what he had explained he encouraged me to come back to see him, but shook my hand saying he hoped he wouldn’t see me again.
Thanks to everyone that got me in touch with the resources at OHSU for my second opinion. The people were as efficient and helpful as those at Providence making it happen, and I would not hesitate to recommend either cancer center at this point.
